NAVAL RESERVE CONSTRUCTION
BASIC-VETERAN (CB-VET)
The CB-VET program allows the enlistment of qualified veterans from all
branches of service interested in both a civilian and military career
in the construction trades. CB-VET enlistees train with Naval Reserve
Seabees one weekend a month at a Seabee unit close to home and gain
valuable experience during a two-week annual training (AT) period.
QUALIFICATIONS
Prior Service: Applications for the CB-VET program at pay grade E-3
must have eight years or less, and members at pay grade E-4 must have
less than 10 years prior service in any branch of the military,
completed 12 weeks of initial active duty training, and have received
either an Honorable Discharge or Honorable Characterization of Service
on release from active duty.
Age: Applicants must be a computed age of 36 or less, with minimum age
of 21.
Mental: A current ASVAB test is required for all applicants not
currently under contract and must attain the required ASVAB test score
for the rate for which they are applying.
Physical: Applicants must pass an entrance physical examination.
REQUIREMENTS
CB-VET enlistees are assigned a temporary construction rating on
entering the program. They must complete their prospective rating "A"
school equivalency qualifications within 24 months of enlistment. A
one-time six month extension may be authorized. Additionally, they must
meet all qualifications and satisfactorily pass the rating exam within
36 months of enlistment to be permanently designated as a third class
petty officer. Formal and self-directed training is available to ensure
skill book completion through a monitored training program. Applicants
will be assigned to a local Naval Construction Force Unit in a pay
billet.
ADVANCEMENT
OPPORTUNITIES
In addition to the outstanding promotion potential within the Seabee
ratings, officer commission opportunities exist for enlisted Seabees.
Numerous enlisted Seabees have been commissioned as Civil Engineer
Corps (CEC) officers after receiving a bachelor's degree in various
recognized engineering fields. These include civil, mechanical,
electrical, mining, petroleum or architectural degrees. Experience in
related professional area is preferred, although new graduates may
apply.
