Naval Reserve
Construction Force
BACKGROUND
"Seabees" are skilled Navy craftsmen who build and defend the
structures the Navy needs around the world. The Seabees are known
throughout the Navy for their "Can Do" spirit. Seabees have served
proudly in almost every world crisis and conflict. Their construction
feats are legendary. Navy Seabees are not only builders, but also
fierce fighters. They can carve a Navy base from the wilderness, then
defend it until reinforcements arrive to occupy it.
QUALIFICATIONS
Basic eligibility requirements are as follows: Civilians and military
veterans who have worked in equivalent civilian occupations may qualify
to enter the Naval Reserve Construction Force. The initial pay grade
depends on their training and experience. Ages 21-36.
ENLISTMENT
OPPORTUNITIES ADVANCED PAY GRADE (APG) PROGRAM
Those individuals with no prior military service must be at least age
21, but less than 37 years old. Recruit training is not required for
the Advanced Pay Grade (APG) Program. Qualified applicants are enlisted
in the APG program with a permanent pay grade of E-3 and advanced to
the approved temporary pay grade. See your Naval Reserve Recruiter if
you believe your experience and training may qualify you for the APG
Program.
NAVY
VETERAN (NAVET)
Provides enlistment or reenlistment opportunities in the Naval Reserve
for personnel who have had prior active or inactive service as a
Seabee. NAVETs who are currently working in the construction field may
also be eligible.
OTHER
SERVICE VETERAN (OSVET)
OSVETs with Seabee Military Occupational Specialties (MOSs) or Air
Force Specialty Codes (AFSCs) may be eligible for the Naval Reserve
Construction Force.
WHAT
SEABEES DO
Navy Seabees train and work as carpenters, masonry workers, plumbers,
steel workers, equipment operators, mechanics, electricians and
architects.
SERVICE
REQUIREMENTS
Naval Reserve Seabees attend paid training periods with their units one
weekend a month. One weekend a quarter, they may travel to their actual
mobilization site, usually a major Navy base, for hands-on training in
their construction specialty. Once a year, reservists perform annual
training (AT) for 12 to 17 days at a Naval installation.
